Yasi Hemmat is a Kansas City native who has been playing violin for over thirty years. Her music draws on her classical training and has expanded over the years to include other genres including folk, rock and fiddle. She grew up with a love of languages, from hearing Farsi spoken by her family to learning French and Spanish at a young age and hearing these languages spoken by friends and teachers. She incorporates the music of these languages into her songs. After living in New Orleans for 6 years, she is now learning to play the washboard.
In addition to solo performance with live looping, she plays in the Kansas City-based duo Sunday Bubbles. Formed in 2024 with guitarist and singer/songwriter Jye Shafer, their original music blends together their distinct backgrounds and styles and is a mix of relaxing folk songs and upbeat fiddle tunes.
